Netflix announces new ‘Sonic’ animated series
In a tweet from its Twitter account, Netflix hinted that they are producing a 3D animated Sonic the Hedgehog film. The series, scheduled to premiere in 2022, will be based on the long-running Sega games character, but there are still no clear specifics about what the show will include.
New Sonic Series on Netflix
The series is created in collaboration with Sega, along with Wild Brain. It is the studio behind various famous TV cartoons and shows for children. Then there is also Man of Action Entertainment which is best known for Ben 10 and the Big Hero 6 TV series from Disney. Although there is not much detail about the series itself, the teaser image of Netflix shows a silhouette of the “classic Sonic” futuristic 3D Sonic style that is used in the series itself.
Assuming the teaser image is indicative of the film, the new character concepts from the Sonic Boom spin-off games and TV show often seem to be ignored.
The original tweet read: “Rings? Check. Sneakers? Check. Speed? SONIC.” Netflix said in the original tweet. “SEGA’s legendary video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog races onto Netflix in a new 3D animated series from @SEGA, @WildBrainHQ and @ManOfActionEnt premiering in 2022.” It was also accompanied by a piece of artwork that showed a red silhouette of Sonic running toward the Netflix logo.
The tweet has since been deleted but we believe it must have been some technical glitch or error.
Earlier this year, Sonic enjoyed success with a live-action feature film, Sonic the Hedgehog. There is a sequel to the film that is going into development in 2021.
Sonic has also appeared in many animated shows, including Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog’s Adventures in the 1990s, Sonic Underground, and Sonic X. From 2014 to 2017, Sonic has headlined a 3D-animated series for Cartoon Network, Sonic Boom.
The new Sonic series is the newest of Netflix’s video or PC game-based shows, with the works of Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Resident Evil series.
